Match Report. U12 Div 3 Final.
What a match we had last night in the Div 3 Development League Final, played in Wexford Park.
Playing with the wind, Vols started brightly with first couple of points. Cushinstown replied with a point and then goaled to move 2 pts clear.
Vols regrouped, and built a 1-06 to 1-01 lead. Dion who was causing them trouble around the middle with the goal. But Cushinstown who seemed to be getting the easier decisions from the ref finished the half on top, scoring 4 pts without reply to go in trailing by the minimum. Vols leading 1-06 to 1-05 at the break. All to do second half against the strong wind.
On the resumption and now aided by the wind Cushinstown were dominating the ball. After putting a couple of attempts wide of the posts, Cushinstown soon found their groove and scored another 4 unanswered points to lead 1-09 to 1-06 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Vols were struggling against the wind, but finally worked the ball into the Cushinstown half to win a free wide on the left. Oran Caulfield dropped it into the crowded area, where Tom Riley won the breaking ball and planted the ball into the top right corner of the net to level it up. 2-06 to 1-09.
Vols were now working hard in the Cushinstown half, and repeated the trick, this time Cormac Bolger winning the break from a Caulfield free to goal again and put the Vols up 3-06 to 1-09 with about 5 mins remaining on the clock.
Cushinstown were now pushing hard but the Vols full back line who were outstanding throughout were holding firm.
With the stadium clock stopped, the ref found another 8 mins of added time from somewhere!
With both sides exchanging points 4mins into the added time, surely time was up! Yet the ref played on, with the Vols crowd in the stand begging for the final whistle.
But fear not, Vols managed to pick off another 2 well worked points cutting in from wide left, and ran out deserving winners 3-09 to 1-10.
It was testament to the lads desire, belief and work ethic to go through the championship with 10 wins from 10.
Special mention to Captain Thomás Wall and Kyra Potter Murphy who were away on hols tonight, but the strength of the squad came to the fore allowing Vice Capt Fionn Quirke to collect the silverware.
It should be noted that the Division 6 Team won their Shield Final last week beating Adamstown in Adamstown. That’s no mean feat either.
Pat Spillane knows his stuff, and had sent the group a great video message of support on the day. I’m sure he’d agree there was certainly no “puke football” on show last night in what was a very entertaining encounter.
Hard luck to Cushinstown, who were very gallant in defeat. Plenty more tough battles ahead between these two sides I’d imagine, but fantastic to come out the tight side of things and claim the Div 3 title.
